Night Photography

Reflection
Night photography was difficult. I went on more shoots this week than I did with any prior assignments. At one point, I went as far as to sneak around someone's front yard taking photos of Halloween decorations. The first real issue I ran into was a decent amount of photos being out-of-focus. This resulted in a learning experience for me, which lead to me using manual focus for the remainder of my outings. When your trying to focus in the dark, auto-focus doesn't fair too well. What I did to fix the issue was zoom in on my subject as much as possible, adjust the focus manually until my subject was clear using Live View and then zoom back out before setting the timer. This method proved to be very successful. The next problem I encountered this week was my shots being interrupted in some way because of the long exposure times of 10-30 seconds, and additionally the 10 second timer. Even being on a secluded beach in the dark wasn't enough to prevent a car from pulling into the parking lot next to me and my shot being ruined by the headlights. While in Mystic I tried very hard to get a shot of the Pizzeria but the amount of cars coming and going made exposures in busy places impossible to capture, which in turn was more time consuming and resulted in further outings to meet my quota of 30 photos. Regardless of the troubles I ran into, I definitely enjoyed the editing process this week. Manipulating some of the Halloween shots was fun and challenging. I learned a lot this week about my camera, night photography, and Photoshop. With that said, it has been a successful learning experience this week.
Two Best Photos

I chose these two images as my best photos for this weeks assignment. I like the photo of the skeleton because of the contrast in colors. The orange and purple really give me that Halloween vibe, which is what I was going for. I feel like the bright colors of the house contrast very well with the shadows on the skeleton to make the image pop. I chose the backboard and rim because of the low key isolation the black and white adjustments made. It reminds of a Jordan poster I had on my wall as a kid.
Two Not-So-Good Photos

These two photos stuck out when searching for my worst photos taken during this weeks night photography assignment. The first photo was taken in downtown New London by the train station. The group of people you see in the image had just came out of a bar to the right of the image and were quite drunk. They purposely stopped and stood in front of my shots and talked about how rude it was to walk in front of a camera as they laughed hysterically. It truly annoyed me for people to act so immature but they had been drinking so I held my tongue and moved on. The second shot was taken at Scott's Market in Waterford. I just could not capture the lighting in the way that I seen it at the time. I probably took 15-20 shots of the market, but none of them appealed to me in the end.
